Timor Leste are ready to give Malaysia a run for their money in their bid to overturn the three-goal deficit in the second leg of the 2019 Asian Cup Finals playoff at the Larkin Stadium in Johor Baru on Monday.

Head coach Fabio da Silva believes that it’s not an impossible task as he’s has been working hard to improve on their defence and promised a better performance from his team.

“The first game is history ... now we’re looking forward to the return match, where our main objective is to get an early goal. We know that Malaysia are a strong side but we need to play a smart game to outwit them,” he said

In the 3-0 victory, striker Ahmad Hazwan Bakri scored a brace in the 17th and 21st minutes before Mohd Amri Yahyah added the third in the 85th in the first leg at Larkin on Thursday.

The victory over Timor Leste was a huge sigh of relief for Ong Kim Swee as his team ended their three-game winless and goalless run.

But Kim Swee is not taking things for granted and has reminded his players to be cautious and not be too over-confident.

“We have to be prepared for a backlash from Timor Leste because they are not going to sit back in this match. I expect them to come at us and play a fast and physical game. The important thing is that we must not let our guards down or we will get punished,” said Kim Swee.

The former international said that he might employ the same tactics used during the first match.

“Timor Leste badly need an early goal to get themselves back into the game. I will have to look at the situation to see if there is a need to change tactics,” he said.

The only setback for Kim Swee is that hard-tackling midfielder Brendan Gan, centreback Shahrom Kalam and goalkeeper Mohd Izham Tarmizi are all on the crock list and are doubtful starters.

“We will make an assessment of the three players before making a decision whether they would be fit to play or not,” he said.

To date, 12 teams have won automatic berths to the 2019 Finals. They are the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Uzbekistan, Syria, Iraq, Iran and China.

Twelve more berths are up for grabs. If Malaysia get past Timor Leste in the two-leg playoffs, they will join 23 other teams in a qualifying competition next year. The 24 teams will be divided into six groups, with the top two qualifying for the Finals.
